About Dominican Rosary Confraternity

One thing I ask of the Lord. This I long to dwell in the house of the Lord,
all the days of my life.

The Rosary Confraternity

The Rosary Confraternity is a spiritual association within the Catholic Church entrusted to the care of the Dominican Order, established to promote devotion to the Holy Rosary and to deepen union with Jesus Christ through the Blessed Virgin Mary. It gathers the faithful into a worldwide spiritual family united in prayer, intercession, and communion.

Its roots are deeply rooted in the tradition of the Church. St. Dominic, received the Rosary from the Blessed Virgin Mary in the early 13th century as a powerful prayer for preaching and conversion of souls. However, the structured Rosary Confraternity as a formal spiritual association with enrolled members and specific obligations developed later in the 15th century through the Dominican preacher Alan de Roche, who received a vision from the Blessed Virgin Mary urging him to revive both the Rosary and the Confraternity. Inspired by this vision, he renewed devotion to the Rosary across Europe. The Confraternity was later approved by Pope Leo X in 1520, and successive popes enriched it with spiritual privileges and indulgences, strengthening its place in the life of the Church.

Members of the Confraternity commit themselves to praying the entire Rosary weekly and to spiritually uniting themselves with all other members—living and deceased—through mutual intercession before God. As Pope Leo XIII explains in Ubi Primum, every Rosary prayed in this spirit includes all members in its intention, creating a continuous exchange of spiritual grace throughout the world.

In our time, members are especially encouraged to embrace the full Rosary of twenty decades, enriched by the Luminous Mysteries introduced by Pope John Paul II in 2002. These mysteries complete the Rosary as a true “compendium of the Gospel,” leading believers through the full mystery of Christ: from the Joyful Mysteries of the Incarnation, through the Luminous Mysteries of His public ministry, into the Sorrowful Mysteries of His Passion and Redemption, and finally to the Glorious Mysteries of His Resurrection and eternal glory.

To pray the full Rosary is to walk the entire path of salvation in communion with Mary and Christ.

Do not settle for fragments when the Church offers the fullness.

ST. DOMINIC

ST. DOMINIC DE GUZMÁN

Dominic was born in Caleruega, Castile, Spain, after 1170. Educated in Palencia, he sold his books to feed the victims of a local famine — a first sign of the poverty that would mark his life. He joined the canons regular of Osma under Bishop Diego de Acebes, and in 1203 accompanied Diego on a diplomatic mission to Northern Europe. Crossing Toulouse, he encountered the Albigensian heresy ravaging southern France. A missionary fire ignited: Dominic would make Christ known to those lost in error.

In 1206, meeting papal legates in Montpellier, Dominic and Diego embraced apostolic poverty — going on foot, without gold or silver, as “evangelical men.” Diego sent his luggage back to Osma. They established a praedicatio at Prouilhe, where women converted from Catharism gathered under Dominic's care. It was there, in the silence of that hill, that Our Lady appeared to Dominic. She showed him the Rosary, that chain of Hail Marys and mysteries, and entrusted it to him as the weapon to crush heresy and convert sinners where argument had failed. The beads would succeed where swords could not.

In 1215, the small band moved to Toulouse. Adopting the Rule of St. Augustine and the name “Preachers,” they were confirmed by Pope Honorius III on December 22, 1216. In 1217, Dominic dispersed his brothers to Paris, Spain, Bologna — the great university cities — and the Order spread like flame. Dominic died exhausted in Bologna on August 6, 1221, canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1234.

He left the Church not merely an Order with great saints, but a prayer: the Rosary, still preached, still crushing heresy, still drawing souls to the Heart of Mary.
